Len Necefer

Len Necefer, Ph.D., is a multidisciplinary professional blending indigenous advocacy, academia, entrepreneurship, and filmmaking. A proud member of the Navajo Nation, he holds a doctorate in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. He currently serves as an assistant professor with joint appointments in Indian Studies and public policy at the University of Arizona. Len’s academic research focuses on natural resource management policy at the intersection of indigenous peoples and environmental sustainability.
As founder and CEO of NativesOutdoors, an outdoor apparel and media company, Len leads efforts that merge indigenous cultural empowerment with outdoor recreation and conservation advocacy. His company specializes in storytelling, consulting, and product design aimed at increasing Native American visibility and influence within the outdoor industry.
Len is also an accomplished filmmaker whose work includes producing and cinematography for the 2025 documentary "The American Southwest," which highlights the ecological and cultural importance of the Colorado River and indigenous stewardship. His prior films, such as "Welcome to Gwichyaa Zhee," explore indigenous histories and environmental challenges. An avid mountaineer, skier, and climber, Len combines his passion for outdoor adventure with media to convey compelling narratives about indigenous resilience and environmental justice.
With professional experience at the U.S. Department of Energy and NASA Glenn Research Center, Len brings a unique technical and policy expertise to his consulting work. His multidisciplinary background, ranging from engineering policy to creative storytelling and indigenous advocacy, positions him as a valuable asset to any team focused on environmental sustainability, indigenous engagement, and outdoor industry innovation.
Len is based in Tucson, Arizona, and continues to actively promote indigenous representation in public lands management, climate resilience, and outdoor recreation through his business, academic work, and media projects. His work has been featured in major publications including Outside, Alpinist, and National Geographic.
